Mastery of Solid Stone and Reclaimed Wood: How Maurer Painting Was Hired to “Not Paint”

When it comes to high-end homes, sometimes painting isn’t what is needed. Maurer Painting was hired to work with an old reclaimed wood and beautiful solid stone home in North Boulder. It was a detailed project, using no paint whatsoever.

The homeowner, Pete Vegas, had a vision for his home of the charm you often find in France or Italy: homes and barns that are hundreds of years old. Something beautifully worn, elegant, and timeless but with modern amenities.

Gorgeous wood beams like old reclaimed oak make up the ceilings and rafter tails. All of the windows are framed with old timber; the lintels above the windows are also old – made from reclaimed wood. 

The doors and trim are walnut. The interior walls are clay-plastered, and the exterior boasts 100-year-old reclaimed wood, as well.

Wood Finishes: One Size Does Not Fit All

What makes this problem especially challenging is that each area and type of wood has to be treated differently. The pool room ceiling is cedar with a beeswax finish, so that called for a completely different type of application than the walnut or the old oak.

Not only that, but Pete really wanted all the details, colors, and textures to come together for a classic and mature, yet modern, look. A home that had the look and feel of being part of the land for a long time, but was refurbished with modern improvements.

To recreate this sense of timelessness takes a personalized and refined touch, with a keen eye for details, materials, and space.

Together with Maurer Painting, Pete set out to ensure the aesthetic appeal while maintaining the old classic beauty of his home.

And, she also wanted to make sure they were protected with something durable, but that also enhanced the natural color and grain of walnut. If treated incorrectly, it can go grayish purple. Working together, they found a perfect brown, providing a rich and beautiful finish.
